A Successful Black Friday

Well at least for me. My goal was to find a desktop to replace my 4 year old system. After careful review of the ads I decided on the HP Pavilion m8226x at Circuit City. I believe it will give another 4 or 5 years. Here is what it is loaded with.

Dual core/64-bit processing: The 3GHz Athlon 64 X2 6000+ This processor is also capable of processing 64 bits of information at once, twice as much as standard 32-bit processors.

  • This desktop features 3GB of DDR2 system memory—enough for the most demanding users, vista, gamers and multimedia professionals.
  • HyperTransport technology works like a fully-integrated frontside bus that increases bandwidth, reduces bottlenecks and enables processors to work more efficiently.
  • Processors search for the same data over and over. L2 caches keep this data neat, organized, and nearby so it can be retrieved more quickly. This 2 x 1MB L2 cache is large, providing a potentially strong boost in performance.

Spacious hard drive: This large hard drive features a 500GB capacity at 7200rpm

Go wireless: Built-in 802.11g wireless LAN

DVD SuperMulti drive:

LightScribe disc-labeling:

Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium: Windows Vista Home Premium.

Video graphics: This desktop features advanced NVIDIA GeForce 6150SE graphics with 128MB of dedicated video memory, an addition to the main system memory, and 623MB total available memory. This memory is great for more demanding games or video editing.

15-in-1 media card reader:

Integrated TV tuner: The built-in TV tuner and personal video recorder (PVR) let you watch, pause, rewind, and record live television—with no monthly fee.

In addition to this system I found amazing deals on a PNY GeForce 8600 512Mb Graphics card and a 500w powersupply.

The best part of this deal is that I did not even have to get up early and stand in line out in the freeze cold morning temperatures of Columbus, OH. Instead Thursday morning before Thanksgiving dinner was even cooked, I logged on to Circuit City’s website and made all my purchases.

No comes the daunting task of transferring all the necessary files and programs to my new Vista system. I’m not thrilled about having to use Vista, but I’ll give it a go. I may end up using PC-BSD on my desktop instead.

500gb is spacious? hahahahaha - who are they kidding? I think Vista comes with a transfer program to transfer stuff from your old computer if you really want to - you may be better just starting from scratch though and just copy your “my documents” across
Lightscribe discs are nice (but the blanks are expensive and they take forever to draw the picture (if you do a complicated one)) but the end results look good. I’ve only ever used mine once. Just make sure you don’t delete the bundled cd recording software as you’ll need it for the labelling.

Good to know…that was going to be my first order of business.
